What is Tribal Markers?

A marking ritual that began as a gift at Burning Man in 2003. Live artists draw symbols, names and blessings on people at festivals, schools, retreats and celebrations around the world.

The artist: Amir Magal
Amir Magal

Born in Jerusalem to a rabbi and calligrapher, Amir learned the art of adornment with the Hamar people of Ethiopia and gave his first markings at Burning Man in 2003. He created the Tribal Body Marker and has led art and nature programs for children for more than 20 years.

After the fire. In January 2025 the Palisades Fire took Amir’s home, all Tribal Markers inventory, and the community where Tribe Sundays gathered. He is rebuilding from Ojai, one mark at a time.

Ambassadors, events & lessons

Amir is training ambassador artists to bring Tribal Markers to their own communities, booking events, and building a curriculum of symbol lessons for schools and families.

Marks at MANA

At MANA, a nature-based school in Ojai, a mark is earned, not bought: kindness, courage and real effort are honored with a mark on a child’s hand, and marks celebrate rites of passage.
